More 2018 Fall shows

I never finished up my upfront review from last May. And now the fall shows are about to start. So here's the rest of them.

FOX

The Cool Kids
It's the new Golden Girls. Three friends at a retirement community have their lives shaken up with the arrival of trouble maker Vicky Lawrence. Great additional cast include Martin Mull, David Allen Grier, and Beverly Leslie himself, Leslie Jordan.

Rel
From comic Rel Howley and based on his life, this sitcom is about a divorced dad starting over. Even without all the church stuff, this show is not for me.

Midseason:
The Passage - A secret government research facility is trying to fight a pandemic.
Proven Innocent - Legal drama about overturning wrongful conviction

The CW
Charmed
Charmed is back but without Shannon Doherty, because no one would hire Shannon Doherty. I never watched the original but I never heard good things about it so I won't watch this either.

All American
Football something something. This will probably be a hit but I'll never watch one episode.

Legacies
Yay, more Vampires. I usually like The CW, but these three shows are crap.

Midseason:
In The Dark - A blind women solves murders. I don't know what more to say except, sign me up.
Roswell, New Mexico - A reboot of the original show Roswell but with adults instead of teenagers. This I will watch as I loved the original.

NBC Fall 2018 Shows, my impressions...

There's not a lot new from NBC this fall.

Manifest

A plane hits turbulence and land five and a half years later. With the airplane device, this mystery draws a lot of parallels to LOST. But unlike most LOST wannabees (Invasion, Threshold, Surface, The Event, FlashForward) this one looks good. Although I said that about a lot of those shows.

New Amsterdam
Doctor show with a far too young medical director at the country's oldest hospital. I didn't make it through the trailer as there is a zero percent chance of me ever watching this.

I Feel Bad
This looks hilarious. It's a family comedy and an office comedy. A working mom has a chaotic home life and works at a start-up with a bunch of millennials. Amy Poehler is producing.

And that's it, except for the...

Mid-season
Abby's - Unlicensed backyard bar
The Village - This is Us, but in Brooklyn
The Enemy Within - A spy in prison helps solve crimes
The Guilded Age - Downtown Abbey in New York in the 1880s

CBS Fall 2018 Shows, my impressions...

Magnum PI
Everything old is new again. And a lot of time, that is OK with me. Magnum looks as sexy as ever. And I love Higgins as a woman and mega-hacker and possible love interest.

God Friended Me
This looks so bad I couldn't make it through the trailer. An atheist radio host gets a literal friend request from god. So either god is a dick and can present evidence of his existence and just doesn't for all but one person or this guy is having a psychic break. Either way, dick god or mental illness does not make for a good show. Keven (Probably) Saves the World was a much better version of this concept. Too bad ABC cancelled that after only of season.

The Neighborhood
A white family from Michigan moves into a black neighborhood in LA. I didn't find one thing funny in the trailer.

Happy Together
The biggest pop star in the world, moves in with his accountant to get away from the poparazzi. Unlike The Neighborhood, this trailer made me laugh all the way through. And I love Damon Wayans Jr.

FBI
Remember Quantico? It's mostly that without the huge cast and non-linear storytelling. Seems like a good fit on the network with all the CSIs and other letters.

Murphy Brown
She's back and like Magnum PI, I'm on board. I stopped watching after the first baby season.

The Red Line - White cop kills black doctor in Chicago
The Code - Military lawyers
Fam - Train-wreck sister moves in

ABC Fall 2018 Shows, my impressions...

The upfronts were last week. Let's start with ABC.

Single Parents
An ensemble comedy about a group of single parents with kids in the same class. SNL's Taram Killiam looks hilarious as the over zealous dad dealing with the other jaded parents.

The Kids are Alright
A family comedy set in the 70s. It's Eight is Enough meets That 70s Show. I'm more of an 80s guy myself. The trailer looks funny. There might be too many characters to follow.

The Rookie
I might be the only one who remembers a one season late 80s drama called The Oldest Rookie. It was a cop who had worked in the public relations department since the academy who transfer to become a beat cop. This is basically the same story but with Nathan Fillion. Considering I love Nathan Fillion and love LA based cop shows with a twist, I'm sure I'll give this a chance.

A Million Little Things
A group of friends deal with the suicide of one of their friends. I'm not sure what the long term story is going to be or if the guy from Office Space who is dead will pop up on flashbacks. I'll consider this more in the fall.

The Alex Baldwin Show
Alec Baldwin had a short lived weekly interview show on MSNBC a few years ago. I found it refreshing and intimate. I remember know what happened to it. But this show seems like a similair concept.

Midseason
Grand Hotel
The last non-corporate family owned hotel in Miami is staffed with sexy waiters and maids. I love the sexy Latinx cast, but this looks like it might suffer from the Dynasty problem. Everyone is too focused on the one property instead of doing what is best for themselves. It's classic sunk costs mentality.

Whiskey Cavalier
I'm not sure if this is a comedy or not. It is an action romance between an FBI agent and a CIA agent. Not sure how this is going to turn out.

ABC Fall 2017 Shows, my impressions...

Inhumans
This got an early pickup but they still don't have a full trailer to release. The eight episode season will run in Agents of SHEILD's time slot before it's fifth season.

The Good Doctor
A young surgeon starts at a new hospital. He is a genius autistic savant and doesn't get along well with others. I tend to avoid all medical dramas.

The Mayor
A rapper runs for mayor as a stunt to sell more albums. Then surprise, he wins. Seems a little too much like our real life. But it does star both Lea Michele and Yvette Nichole Brown, both of whom I love. I will give this a small chance.

The Gospel of Kevin
Kevin is a waste-oid who suddenly discovers he is a profit of the lord. Now he wanders the countryside helping random people Hulk style. I'm hoping this is good as it stars Jason Ritter who I've always been a fan of. TIL, he is the son of the late John Ritter.

Ten Days in the Valley
So there's a TV writer and he kid gets abducted but the whole thing is similiar to a storyline on her TV show. The looks way to inside to be successful. Plus it seems very specific to its opening storyline.

The Crossing
A large number of people wash ashore near a small town, most of them dead. It turns out they are refugees of a war in the future. The small town must figure out what to do with them. This also seems a little current. It's easy to dismiss refugees when they are brown and don't speak English. I'm not sure about the long term viability of this show.

Deception
A famous magician starts to work with the FBI to solve complex cases of misdirection. So it's basically Castle but with a magician instead of a famous writer. I'll give this a try.

For the People
Another legal drama.

Alex Inc
Zach Braff has a new show where he is trying to start some podcast company. Not only does this sound like a terrible show, it sounds like a really bad business decision.

Splitting Up Together
Pam from The Office and the dad from Scream Queens are getting a divorce. They are still going to live together and raise the kids together. So it is basically The Real O'Neals but with younger children.

Rosanne
Shows returning is the new trend. I didn't watch much of the original show. I haven't decided if I will watch the return.

The Bachelor Winter Games
When I was ready the description earlier this week, I winced and face-palmed. My coworker asked if I had a brain freeze. I then read him the line that broke me: "[This show] will reunite the all-stars at a luxurious winter resort, where they will go head-to-head in winter-themed athletic challenges, including the toughest sport of all – love." But of course I'm going to watch every episode.

Dancing with the Stars Junior
Really?

The CW Fall 2017 Shows, my impressions...

The CW has a rather solid schedule. They only have a few new shows to add this year.

Dynasty
Dynasty is back! At the start, the big feud seems to be between the Ivanka-like Fallon and the business executive Cristal. These are great improvements over the original female characters. The gay son Steven is around too, but no one cares anymore that he is gay. Except that he is having an affair with his new step-mom's nephew. This looks amazing. I really hope they bring Alexis in at the start of season two like in the original.

Black Lightning
Another superhero show set in the Arrow-verse. Or at least I'm assuming it's in the same universe. It's not a direct spin-off like the last Flash and Legends. What I love about this is it not an origin story. Black Lightning gave up being a hero long ago and now has to return. It's also in New Orleans and I love that city.

Life Sentence
A new comedy-drama to go along with Jane The Virgin and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. This one is about a young woman who suddenly finds out her terminal cancer is cured. All the stuff she did thinking there would be no tomorrow and no consequences start to pile up. I enjoy the CW comedies but I may not have time for this one.

Valor
Oh look, another special forces TV. Does this make three? This one looks like it might be about POWs. I'll skip all these, thank you very much.

CBS Fall 2017 Shows, my impressions...

I'm back from vacation and ready to finish up on my upfronts reviews. Let's continue with CBS.

The big news is they finally have a trailer for Star Trek Discovery which was supposed to be part of last season's schedule. But it looks terrible. They said, what did people hate about past Star Trek shows? The hated the prequel. Let's do that again! They hated the lady captain. Let's do that again! But of course I'm going to watch it.

Young Sheldon
The trailer looks great. It's your basic The Goldbergs slash Wonder Years with a grown-up version of the character narrating the events of his childhood. The difference is the audience is already familiar with the adult character and his idiosyncrasies.

Me, Myself and I
Bobby Moynihan is leaving SNL to star in his own show. This is about the three stages of a characters life, a 14 yo version growing up in the 90s, the 40 yo version going through a divorce, and the 65 year old version played by John Larroquette. I think this might be a good formula and I plan on watching.

9JKL
An actor moves back to New York and lives next door to his parents and brother, on either side of him. I watched the trailer and didn't laugh once.

Seal Team
This is totally not The Brave. That show is on NBC and it is totally different.

SWAT
You know what CBS needs? Another police prodecural. The original SWAT starred TV series kiss-of-death Robert Urich and only lasted two seasons.

Wisdom of the Crowd
Crowdsourcing to solve crime. It's CBS so it's a procedural. And it's got Jeremy Piven, another reason not to watch.

FOX Fall 2017 Shows, my impressions...

FOX has some of the best shows of all the networks.  The only three new shows on their fall schedule are all science fiction.

The Orville
After watching the trailer three times, I'm even more excited about this than I was when I first heard about this last month. This looks so good, CBS should just cut their loses and stop production of that crappy new Star Trek show right now.

Gifted
A family with two mutants kids goes on the run from the government. Considering how good Legion was, I'm expecting this to be good, even if it does have kids in it. I'm glad they are making more X-Men based TV shows.

Ghosted
Adam Scott and Craig Robinson join a secret agency hunting the paranormal and aliens. This looks hilarious.

LA to Vegas
This show is about a flight crew going the short trip from LA to Las Vegas. The trailer looks hilarious but I can't image this will be successful. I love everyone in the cast.

The Resident
A medical show with a failing star surgeon now killing people and an obnoxious head resident who the new interns hate. I have never liked medical dramas so this won't get my attention.

9-1-1
A rather bland sounding procedural about first responders. There's not even a trailer for it on FOX's youtube channel. But Angela Basset is in it so there's that.

NBC Fall 2017 Shows, my impressions...

It's upfronts week. NBC and Fox were the first with their announcements on Monday. Last year I missed making these reports because I was working hard on my book, available on Amazon. NBC only has three new shows on their fall schedule.

Will & Grace
I wrote about this earlier but I'm still so excited this is happening. Will they just ignore the future events of the finale or just jump to their kids going to college? Either way I will totally watch this. The trailer is awesome as the cast preforms a version of As If We Never Said Goodbye from Sunset BLVD.

The Brave
An elite team rescues people from bad guys in bad parts of the world. This is total not Seal Team. It's a totally different show. The trailer is a bit confusing as to who is the star and they give away the ending of the first episode I think. It stars that guy from Under the Dome and Anne Heche.

Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders
True crime is a big deal right now and NBC is getting in on it. The Menendez murders was quickly overshadowed by OJ and Jean Benet Ramsey, but it was a big deal when it happened.

In addition to the scheduled fall shows, these are the other shows on order. There are no trailers for these.

Good Girls
Thelma and Louis the TV show? Except there's three of them. That's what it sounds like.

Reverie
A hostage negotiator and college professor uses VR technology to live out fantasy lives. Ready Player One doesn't come out until next year, maybe this is trying to get a jump on that.

Rise
Ted Mosby becomes a drama teacher and inspires students and the small town.

AP Bio
The new biology teacher uses his smart students for his own purposes.

Champions
A hot guy who lives with his hotter brother finds out he has a teenage son and laughs ensue.

The Awesome Show
New tech gets showcased each week.

Ellen's Game of Games
A new game show with trivia and physical challenges. Ellen's always funny.

Genius Junior
A game show for smart kids hosted by NPH.

The Handmade Project
This is a version of a cooking show challenge but with crafting. Really?

Other than Will & Grace, I'm a little disappointed in NBC

2017 Straight To Series, my impressions

We are one week away from the official upfronts events. I skipped out on my usually upfronts run-down last years as I was working hard on finishing my book.

Entertainment weekly wrote up all the pilot candidates up for consideration this year. Check it out here. In that list there were four series which were ordered direct to series. This happens occasionally when the network thinks a concept is that good. I'm going to watch all four of these shows.

Orville - Fox
A science fiction comedy series about a ship that not exactly the Galaxy Class Flagship. Seth McFarlene with write, produce, and star. Bobbi from SHIELD plays the first officer and ex-wife of the captain. This looks better than the new Star Trek series from CBS that never seems to ever going to happen.

Inhumans - ABC

Set in the MCU, Inhumans isn't exactly a spin-off of Agents of SHIELD. That show has had inhumans for two seasons. This show is about the royal family that was supposed to be a movie but never quite made it. I don't know how they are going to do Medusa. That's a very heavy CG character if there ever was one.

Young Sheldon - CBS
This spin-off of The Big Bang Theory is obviously about Sheldon growing up in Texas with his religious mother, alcoholic father, older brother, and twin sister. The show starts when he is nine years old so that means if there is a season three, he will be in college then. There's always room for more TV shows set in the 80s.

Will & Grace - NBC
Netflix asked NBC for the rights for a Will & Grace reunion and NBC responded, "Thanks for the idea, suckers!" I'm not sure how this will work since in the finale, it was established that Will and Grace didn't talk to each other for 20 years. It's only been 11 years. I would be perfectly fine if they speed up the timeline and have them pick up with their kids going to college in the first episode. Soaps age characters up much faster than this.

2014 Shows Getting a Second Season

NBC
The Mysteries of Laura
What I said last year: Grace is back now a NYPD detective and single mom.  Probably yes.
What I say now: I didn't have time for this in the fall and I don't regret it. It's just no for me.

ABC
How To Get Away With Murder
What I said last year: Law students and their professor is also a high end defense attorney. Looks like the plot of Legally Blonde.  Probably no.
What I say now: This was a hit from the first episode. I don't know how they will continue to be her students as she teaches a first year law school class.

black-ish
What I said last year: The father of a rich black family is worried his family is loosing their blackness.  Probably no.
What I say now: This was a hit it just never interested me.

Secrets and Lies
What I said last year: Ryan Phillip is a dad accused of killing a neighborhood boy.  Julliete Lewis is the detective investigating.  Looks good but I’m not sure how they can stretch this into a series. Probably yes.
What I say now: This came during a busy mid-season so I never watched this. The busy summer schedule means its probably not going to be a catch-up show.

American Crime
What I said last year: Another show about one murder.  The victim is white and suspect is Latino with lots of racial discussion.  Also, how could this stretch into a series.  Probably yes.
What I say now: I regret not making time for this show. I hope to catch up over the summer

Galavant
What I said last year: No joke this is a musical comedy about a medieval knight.  This will be an amazing flop of which I will watch every episode.  Definitely yes.
What I say now: This was great and I'm super surprised it was renewed. I'm in for the long haul.

Fresh Off The Boat
What I said last year: An Asian family is running a cowboy steak restaurant in 1990’s Orlando.  The 90’s setting is what make this look good.  Probably yes.
What I say now: I have most of the episodes on my DVR and I haven't decided if I want to pick this show up for the summer.

Agent Carter
What I said last year: Didn't say anything
What I say now: The limited run (8 episodes) was brilliant. It looks like they might be doing only another 8 episodes next year. This is another brilliant idea. Not everything needs to be the traditional network series.

CBS
Madam Secretary
What I said last year: A former CIA agent turned college professor becomes Secretary of State.  Looks really good plus Bebe Neuwirth is in it.  Definitely yes.
What I say now: I just didn't have time in my super busy Sunday schedule to watch this. Had it been on a different night I probably would have watched this.

Scorpion
What I said last year: A genius hacker and his startup friends get drafted by the CIA to solve problems. The problem I have is the first problem isn't a problem. The first episode is about trying to get the air traffic control software back online at LAX so the planes don't crash. This assumes the the pilots can neither fly without computers or be reached by radio.  Bad writing from the start. Definitely no.
What I say now: How did this get a full season much less a second season. I weep for CBS.

CSI: New Orleans
What I said last year: I haven't watch one episode from the franchise so I'm not starting now. Definitely no.
What I say now: No thank you.

FOX
Gotham
What I said last year: It's Smallville but with Batman.  This will either be amazing or the worst thing on TV.  Regardless, definitely yes.
What I say now: This got bad and boring super fast. Do we really need another Batman? The answer is no.

Last Man on Earth
What I said last year: Will Forte is the last man on Earth.  Why? Undetermined.  Is there a last woman on Earth? Undetermined. Definitely yes
What I say now: Phil is a chronic liar and I almost dropped this show. There were a lot of twists and it was hard to watch at times but I think it ended well. I will watched next season just to see Jason Sudeikis as Phil's brother.

Empire
What I said last year: It's Dynasty but with a black family and a music empire.  It even has the disappointing gay son. Definitely no.
What I say now: This was a huge hit. I plan on watching the first season over the summer. "Tell me why I shouldn't throw this drink in your bitch ass face?"

The CW
The Flash
What I said last year: I think this is my top pick for the fall.  They previewed Barry Allen with a two episode arc on Arrow this season.  Superhero shows are the best when there is a good support team behind them and The Flash has one.  Definitely yes.
What I say now: This show was amazing. The first season was so dense I don't know where they can go from here.

Jane The Virgin
What I said last year: A virgin gets accidentally artificially inseminated.  Why does this exist?  Definitely no no no.
What I say now: A friend of mine said this was they best new show of the year. I do plan on catching up on this show over the summer.

iZombie
What I said last year: Didn't say anything
What I say now: Looks good but I just don't think I have the time for another show. I hope to put this on my summer list.

CW 2015 Fall Shows

As usual only a few shows on The CW.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
So a woman moves across country to be near a guy. This is the plot of too many bad movies I’m glad this bad behavior is finally considered ‘crazy’. Probably No

Legends of Tomorrow
The Atom, Firestorm, Hawkgirl, White Canary, Captain Cold, and Heatwave are recruited by time traveler Kip Hunter to stop one of my favorite DC villains Vandal Savage. We have reached Peak Superhero. Definitely yes

Containment
A virus breaks out and they close down sections of Atlanta to contain it. I’m in. Definitely Yes.

FOX Fall 2015 Shows

FOX also seems to have a lot to offer in the coming year.

The Grinder
Rob Lowe is a TV Lawyer whose long term series just ended. His brother is a real lawyer who is not very assertive. Together they make the perfect lawyer. Wait, isn’t Rob Lowe on the NBC show about the end of the world? Probably Yes

Grandfathered
John Stamos finds out he had an adult son and an infant granddaughter. This might be good. Probably Yes

Minority Report
Based on the movie, one of the former precogs joins with the police to try to stop crimes after the pre-crime program was shut down. I love SciFi so Definitely Yes

Rosewood
Like the sadly canceled Body of Proof, this is a hot cop partnered with a hot medical examiner. The thing is, the ME (Rosewood) has only 10 years to live at the best. Looks good but this season is already very full. Probably No

Scream Queens
New horror-comedy anthology from Glee and American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy. Definitely Yes

Mid-season
Lucifer
The devil gets bored and leaves hell to solve crime in LA. No really this looks good as it is based on the DC comic series of the same name. Definitely Ye

The Frankenstein Code
An old sheriff is murdered and scientists insert his brain in a new super hot body. I’m skeptical so Probably Yes

The Guide to Surviving Life
Millennials working and living together. Could be fun. Probably Yes

Bordertown
An animated show about life on the Mexican border. I’m not impressed. Probably No

X-Files
Earlier this year Chris Hardwick interview Gillian Anderson and they started the idea of an X-Files reboot and it took off from there. It start next January and I couldn’t be more pleased. Definitely Yes

CBS Fall 2015 Shows

I rarely watch CBS but they have a few good prospects.

Life in Pieces
A family comedy with two of my favorites Dianne Weist and Colin Hanks. It’s the new Parenthood. Definitely Yes

Supergirl
Superman’s cousin’s origin story. Even though she was older than Kal El when they left Krypton, she arrived later. And as every superhero needs a team, hers includes her human sister, a nerdy coworker, and Jimmy Olsen. We have hit Peak Superhero. Definitely Yes

Code Black
It’s ER but in LA. I couldn’t make it through 2 minutes of the trailer before I lost interest. Definitely No

Angel From Hell
Sue Sylvester is Jules from Pysch’s guardian angel. I like the case so I’ll give it a shot. Probably Yes

Limitless
Based on the movie I have yet to watch staring Bradley Cooper, a guy takes a pill and becomes superhero smart. I consider this a superhero show. Also Definitely Yes

ABC Fall 2015 Shows

ABC has the strongest slate of new shows. This is probably why they opted against another SHIELD spin-off. Why bother when you have so many winners. Maybe next year Lance and Bobbi.

Dr. Ken
Senior Chang gets his one show about his life before became an actor. It’s a family comedy and office comedy. Asians are in right now. Definitely Yes

The Muppets
The Muppets are back. The End. Definitely Yes

Of Kings and Prophets
Religious fanatics kill men, women, and children because their god tells them to. No, it’s not ISIS it’s the biblical story of Saul and David. Definitely no

Oil
The oil boom is on in North Dakota. This looks so bad I couldn’t make it through the trailer. Definitely No

Quantico
At first I thought this would suck, but after watching the trailer, I’m hooked. It looks like they are doing the two concurrent storyline one in the past while the main character is in FBI training at Quantico and the present story where she is trying to solve the bombing of Grand Central she was framed for.

Mid season

The Catch
Con artists and private investigators. Yes and Yes. Definitely Yes

The Family
The child of a small town politician returns after being kidnapped and presumed dead for ten years. But is it really him or an imposter set up by a rival or his “mother” to propel her into the governors mansion. Definitely Yes

The Real O’Neals
From Dan Savage, a teenage boy comes out to his family but that not even close to the biggest scandal they have. This looks hilarious. Definitely Yes

Uncle Buck
Based on the John Candy movie which also had a spin-off series in the 90s, Uncle Buck is the bad sheep baby sitter. Unlike the movie and the first TV show, I might actually watch this. Probably Yes

Wicked City
A serial killer is murdered women in 1982 Las Angeles. The only serial killer shows I will watch are retro shows. Also he said one of my favorite lines, “What about my needs?” in the trailer. If another character said, “This is my special day” I would think someone is reading my mind. Definitely Yes

NBC Fall 2015 Shows

The upfronts are out this week. NBC created new YouTube channels for each of its new shows which I find odd. All the other networks just have them on their regular channels. First let's look at the fall shows.

Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris
A live variety show in Prime Time? I’ll watch this but it is going to end badly like they always do. Definitely Yes

Blindspot
A woman is found covered in new tattoos which have the secret to a vast conspiracy. She has no memory but she and an FBI agent have to figure things out. I’m not sure about how this would would. Episode 8: oh here’s a tattoo we haven’t noticed, let’s go figure out what this means.  Probably No

Hearthbreaker
She’s a hot doctor and one of the world’s top cardiologist. From the trailer she has to balance saving lives with obtaining funding. I’m not not interested. Definitely No

Heroes Reborn
If you watch the original series, every season they made up a new back story as to why people had powers so I guess they are starting again. We are approaching Peak Superhero. Probably Yes

People Are Talking
Another comedy about hot 30-somethings. I just can’t quit those. Definitely Yes

The Player
A former special forces operative tries to stop crimes while one percenters gamble on whether he will succeed or not. I love high concept TV shows but this one is a bit to out there for me even with the Las Vegas angel. Definitely No

Here's what's in store for mid-season. If the current season means all the way through next summer.

Hot & Bothered
Eva Longoria is a telenovela star and this show is about her home and work life. Yes, yes, a thousand times yes! Definitely Yes

Chicago Med
As we approach Peak Superhero this show also shows we are approaching Peak Chicago. This is the newest in the Fire-PD franchise neither of which I watch. Definitely No

Crowded
I love Patrick Warburton and this looks like a funny family comedy where the rest of the family won’t leave them alone.

Coach Didn’t watch it then, won’t watch it now. Definitely No

Superstore
A workplace comedy about a superstore starring Ugly Betty. Definitely yes

You, Me and the End of The World
A comet is heading to destroy the Earth and hilarity ensues. Definitely Yes

Key:
Definitely yes - I will watch every episode
Probably yes - I will watch the pilot
Probably no - I might watch the pilot
Definitely no - I won't even watch the pilot

2013 Shows Getting a Second Season

NBC
The Blacklist
What I said last year: James Spader is a fugitive who begins working with the FBI to help them find other bad guys.  I like this new take on the old bad-guy-helps-the-good-guys mostly because of James Spader.
What I say now: NBC's sole survivor was a consistently good show all season.  The stories have been great and the arc has been compelling.  He's probably her father.

FOX
Sleepy Hollow
What I said last year: Ichabod Crane wakes up in the present after being dead or asleep for 250 years. Then he teams up with a modern detective to try to stop the headless horseman from killing more people.  I like the way this looks.
What I say now: I haven't watched this yet but it's on my summer list.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine
What I said last year: SNL's Andy Samberg stars in a buddy cop comedy as goofy but effective detectives and their no nonsense new captain.  This looks great especially with Andy Samberg. involved.
What I say now: This show has been great because of great writing and great characters.  Looking forward to much more.

ABC
Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D
What I said last year: It's the Avengers TV show without any of the Avengers.  This looks like it will be the big hit of the fall.  I can't wait for this.
What I say now: Great show I look forward to each week.  The way they integrate in into the Avengers movies (Thor, Captain America) has been unlike anything seen before on TV.  And next year we get another S.H.I.E.L.D. show set in the post-war 40s.

The Goldbergs
What I said last year: It's that 80s show.  A family show with the youngest always with his full sized video camera to follow the family's antics.  The hot blond cop from Reno: 911 is the mom and I was on board with just that.
What I say now: This show is great.  I love the nebulous 1980-something setting.  But it's the ensemble that makes this show one of the best shows on TV right now.  Everyone of them is wonderful with Wendi Mclendon-Covey at the top of her game.

The CW
The Originals
What I said last year: A spin-off of The Vampire Diaries about the original Vampire family.  And this one takes place in New Orleans like last season of True Blood. Does the world need another vampire TV show?
What I say now: I guess the world does need another vampire TV show.

CBS
Mom
What I said last year: Anna Faris is a single mom who also lives with her crazy mom played by Allison Janey.  It's from Chuck Lorre so it could be good like Big Bang or terrible like 2.5 men.  Either way it will be successful.
What I say now: I watched the first few episodes which were quite funny.  I stopped because I realized I didn't like or care about one single character.

The Millers
What I said last year: They had me at Will Arnet.  When parents find out that both their son and daughter have secretly gotten divorced without telling them, they get divorced and move in with both of them.
What I say now: I missed the first few episodes and it looked like it was going to be cancelled.  Now that it's been renewed I think I might catch up this summer.

Midseason
The 100
The CW show about humans returning to a post atomic wasteland from space stations has been very good.  Many people have died on the ground and in space but the Earth still has lots of grounders.

About a Boy
NBC's only comedy.  I haven't watched it yet.  It might make it on my list next fall.

CW 2014 Fall Shows

CW has only 2 new shows on the schedule.

The Flash
I think this is my top pick for the fall.  They previewed Barry Allen with a two episode arc on Arrow this season.  Superhero shows are the best when there is a good support team behind them and The Flash has one.  Definitely yes.

Jane the Virgin
A virgin gets accidentally artificially inseminated.  Why does this exist?  Definitely no no no.

CBS Fall 2014 Shows

Madam Secretary
A former CIA agent turned college professor becomes Secretary of State.  Looks really good plus Bebe Neuwirth is in it.  Definitely yes.

Scorpion
A genius hacker and his startup friends get drafted by the CIA to solve problems.  The problem I have is the first problem isn't a problem.  The first episode is about trying to get the air traffic control software back online at LAX so the planes don't crash.  This assumes the the pilots can neither fly without computers or be reached by radio.  Bad writing from the start.  Definitely no.

NCIS: New Orleans
I haven't watch one episode from the franchise so I'm not starting now.  Definitely no.

Stalker
Detectives in the stalker division of the LAPD.  Wait, there's a stalker division of the LAPD?  Probably no.

The McCarthys
Four grown siblings spend way to much time together including one gay brother.  Could be good. Probably yes.

ABC Fall 2014 Shows

The Whispers
This super creepy show is about children who get instructions from invisible friends to do terrible things.  Are they ghosts, aliens, interdimensional invaders, or the voices from the future?  It’s probably aliens.  Plus Aiden from Revenge is back, yay!  Definite yes.

Cristela
A Latina corporate worker and law student deals with family, work, and school.  Probably no.

How to Get Away With Murder
Law students and their professor is also a high end defense attorney. Looks like the plot of Legally Blonde.  Probably no.

Forever
New York’s best medical examiner has secret: he’s immortal. Probably no.

Black-ish
The father of a rich black family is worried his family is loosing their blackness.  Probably no.

Secrets and Lies
Ryan Phillip is a dad accused of killing a neighborhood boy.  Julliete Lewis is the detective investigating.  Looks good but I’m not sure how they can stretch this into a series.  Probably yes.

American Crime
Another show about one murder.  The victim is white and suspect is Latino with lots of racial discussion.  Also, how could this stretch into a series.  Probably yes.

Galavant
No joke this is a musical comedy about a medieval knight.  This will be an amazing flop of which I will watch every episode.  Definitely yes.

Selfie
It stars Amy from Doctor Who so definitely yes.

Fresh Off The Boat
An Asian family is running a cowboy steak restaurant in 1990’s Orlando.  The 90’s setting is what make this look good.  Probably yes.

Manhattan Love Story
Similar to NBC’s A to Z, this is about a couple who start dating in the pilot.  Except it’s in New York and we can hear their inner dialogs.  Probably yes.
